The Inside Scoop on After Jesus Before Christianity
The Inside Scoop on After Jesus Before Christianity is a series of exclusive podcast interviews and follow-up Zoom chats with five of the scholars instrumental in the production of the book, After Jesus Before Christianity. The series is enhanced by open-ended conversations among participants via a special email discussion group.
The series runs from January 11 – February 15, 2022.
This program is a special gift available only to Early Christian Texts patrons and Westar Institute members. Become a Bible and Beyond patron or a Westar member before January 4 to qualify for this special gift.
In the podcast interviews, you’ll hear the scholars (Jason BeDuhn, Susan “Elli” Elliott, Brandon Scott, Hal Taussig, and Erin Vearncombe) share stories about their involvement in this cutting-edge scholarship and how it impacted them personally. It’s our hope that listening to their stories and participating in the discussions that follow will help you integrate new ideas into your own historical understanding and/or spiritual journey.

Here’s how the program works:
- Each Tuesday, from January 11 through February 8, a podcast interview will be posted to a private Inside Scoop web page. You can listen to the podcast anytime that’s convienient for you.
- The following Tuesday, from January 18 through Feburary 15, we’ll host a one-hour zoom chat with the scholar whose interview was posted the week before. (See the Schedule section below.)
- Participants also have the opportunity to become part of an email discussion group made up of the other people participating in the series. This email discussion group (a Google Group) will remain available throughout the series.
The series is offered for free, our gift for your generous support! However, registration is required for participation.

The Inside Scoop on After Jesus Before Christianity Episode 1
Jason BeDuhn studies ancient Christian, Jewish, and Manichaean thinkers. A professor of Comparative Study of Religions and Asian Studies at Northern Arizona University, he also co-chairs Westar Institute’s Christianity II Seminar. He is the primary contributor to the chapter in After Jesus Before Christianity, titled “Paul Obscured.”
Susan “Elli” Elliott

Susan “Elli” Elliott
Susan “Elli” Elliott is a writer, lecturer, workshop leader, and environmental activist. Her research focuses on the social context of early Christianity with an emphasis on family relationships, pagan and Roman imperial backgrounds. Her book, Family Empires, Roman and Christian (Vol. 1) was published in 2018. She is the primary consultant for the chapter in After Jesus Before Christianity, titled “Experimental Families.”
Bernard Brandon Scott
The Inside Scoop on After Jesus Before Christianity Episode 3
Bernard Brandon Scott, one of the three primary creators of the book, is the Darbeth Distinguished Professor of New Testament Emeritus from Phillips Theological Seminary. He is a charter member of the Jesus Seminar and the founder of the Christianity Seminar. The author and editor of 22 books, among them Hear Then the Parable and The Real Paul: Recovering His Radical Challenge.

Hal Taussig, one of the three primary creators of After Jesus Before Christianity, has recently retired as professor of New Testament at Union Theological Seminary in New York. He edited the award-winning A New New Testament and has published fourteen books. He currently blogs and co-instructs online courses on Early Christian Texts. His mediagraphy includes many hig- profile public media outlets.
The Inside Scoop on After Jesus Before Christianity Episode 5
Erin Vearncombe, one of the three primary creators of After Jesus Before Christianity, is an Assistant Professor in the faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto, appointed to the office of the Dean. Her research specialty is the social origins and histories of Jesus movements in the first centuries of the common era, with particular focus on practices of dress.
